National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)was formed in 1987 as a response to a recommendation made by The Carnegie Task Force on Teaching in the report A Nation Prepared Teacher's of the 21st Century. This report was written in response to the seminal report A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform.

The NBPTS is dedicated to bringing respect and recognition to the teaching profession. The mission of the NBPTS is to maintain high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, to operate a national, voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards, and to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools.

National Board Certification is developed by teachers, with teachers, and for teachers. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have demonstrated that their teaching practice meets the high and rigorous standards that have been established. The certificate is a symbol of teaching excellence. There are now over 100,000 National Board Certified Teachers across the country.

We are proud to have 162 teachers in Arlington Public School classrooms who have active National Board Certification in various certificate areas.

Changes to the National Board Certification Process

Since NBCTs have a proven track record of improving student learning and achievement, the National Board is committed to reducing barriers unrelated to the quality of a teacher’s practice to enable more teachers to achieve certification. Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, candidates will be able to choose the order in which they complete the components of the certification process.

Candidates who pursue National Board Certification under the revised process will complete components as they are made available with the next availability to certify in the 2016-17 school year or beyond.
